Insomnia. Blech.

I've taken a tablet, but it will take a minimum of half an hour to work. Half an hour of the 5:20 that I have left to sleep. >_

Writer's Block: Mirror, mirror [28 Sep 2009|02:05pm]

If you broke a mirror, would you worry about bad luck even if you're not superstitious? Would you walk under a ladder or cross a black cat's path on a dare? Is there anything you're superstitious about?

No. Yes. No.

I make jokes about superstitions, that is all. If you claim to 'not be superstitious' and still worry about these things, then you're obviously superstitious. And lying to yourself.

Sorry for neglecting you guys. So much is happening, but currently all my writing effort is going down on paper, in a nice little collection. Maybe some of you will see it one day.

I'm so drunk right now it's not funny.

Luckily I can still recognise my spelling errors. Tonight was fun. Hopefully tomorrow will prove the hypothesis that I don't get hangovers true.

Bonne soirée a tous!

Things have regularly gone alternatingly up and down over the past week, but all is still well.

France is a leeeetle bit annoying in terms of beurocracy, delays, and bizarre opening hours, but on the whole things are fairly nice.

Will come running when it all plummets downhill.

It's been a while.

I've been settling down into my accomodation, buying things I need, and just generally living the good life.

Classes start on the 14th, so I don't have much to do until then.

I've been wondering just exactly how much I'll improve in my French speaking ability, because at the moment it's sub-par. I hope to be everyday-proficient, if not better (say... complex-subject-proficient) by the time I leave. It will make me feel like my time here was not misspent.

I already fear that I won't have enough time here, so I'm trying to savour everything that happens, even when I'm struggling to translate an obscure word like 'extrude', or falling up a set of stairs (for the third time in as many minutes). It's a nice place to stay, La Rochelle, but it's certainly not home. I'm glad I know the bounds of my time, but I'm sure when I return home, I'll long to come back. If only for the independence.

I feel productive, healthy, and mostly happy.

I could use a hug though. I don't know anyone here well enough for some good ol' physical contact.

Life in La Rochelle is pretty awesome. I have internet, chocolate, Salt and Vinegar chips, wine, meals, snacks, water, space, friends, a great view, and a comfy bed. What more could I want? A lot, but I don't.

Tomorrow my family drop me either at my accommodation (which I may or may not have access to) or at the local youth hostel, and I'll officially begin my time at L'Université de La Rochelle.

I'm terrified.

I'm empty of words at the moment. They can't fully explain how I feel. But when can they, really?

Only music can drain me of these tensions, but I have no outlet at the moment. Perhaps tomorrow.

Finished our time in Finland with relaxation, and a walk in the rain. Said a teary goodbye this morning, and am sitting in an airport café sensationalising my life for twitter.

Will update next from either Milan or Rome, depending on WiFi access in our hotel in the former.

I'm not dead. Have been relaxing and sightseeing.

Had reindeer for dinner tonight. It is gamey.

Have been eating copious amounts of junkfood, as it is in the house all the time.

Am feeling a tad sore today, for some reason. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Possibly going to Estonia.

Sauna.

These are my two favourite things about Finland right now.

Got to finland today. It's good to see our relatives and catch up. So far Finland is nice, but I have yet to actually see most of it.

Also saw Billy elliot, was absolutely amazing.

Today we had a relaxing walk through Hyde Park, and a picnic on the edge of The Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain (aka the freezing cold stream). Finally cooled down, on our last day here. Off to Finland tomorrow. Should be fun.

Last two days have been fun. Shopping in Oxford Street and Knightsbridge, and perusing the markets in Covent Garden.

Nothing much else. It's been faitly docile.

Tomorrow we move out to Heathrow, and then on to Finland on Tuesday. Relatives will meet us in Helsinki, and then we'll see what there is to see of out motherland.

This morning we broke fast at the hotel again, then went out to the Qantas office at Stamford Brook to try and organise our flights home. Unfortunately it wasn't actually a commercial operation, and we ended up calling Qantas and talking to them from outside the building, as people from the company came and went, giving us bemused looks. One result of this endeavour: I may end up returning to london later in the year to finish my visit to Europe.

We then had lunch at a very nice bar with reasonable prices, which we may return to later in our visit. Walked back to the tube, and proceeded to the Portobello Road Markets. They were wonderful, full of gadgets, antiques, and... things.

We've returned to our room for now, and will move out for dinner later. Tomorrow The Parents travel out to Oxford and Cambridge, whilst the sister and I move over to Hyde Park. I would also love to go out to the university cities, but I really want more time in London too. Perhaps at a later date.

That's all for now.

Today we had breakfast at our hotel, followed by taking the victoria line to Victoria, where we purchased our tickets to Wicked. After some discussion, Amelia and I scored some awesome, centrally located £60 tickets for £25.
Quite chuffed, we headed to the Tower of London where we had lunch, and then wandered into the medieval behemoth.
It was a very interesting place, full of wonderful medieval architecture, and historic personae, but was a little sameish, and hot.
Returning to our room, we put on our (almost) best clothes, and headed back to the theatre. The parents ate, but Meals and I decided to get something afterwards.

What can I say? Wicked was amazing. Galinda's voice was a little shaky at the start, but it improved throughout the show, and she made up for it by being a brilliant actress or subtle means and absolute insanity. Elfeba was incredible. She was a stand-in, but had we not know, we shouldn't have noticed, 'cause she was absolutely wonderful. I'm so glad we went, and hopefully we will go and see Phantom in the next few days.

We then had dinner in our room, and now I'm writing this.

The finish.

London [06 Aug 2009|07:24am]
I'm here in our room at the London Town Hotel, sweltering. London is currently about four times hotter than Newcastle was. I always have, and still do, prefer the cold.

In other news, London is as fantastic as everyone I've ever known has said. The oldity, the chicness, and the rude locals make me feel I could live here. It's wonderful.

Today we arrived in Heathrow Airport at about 7am, then travelled to our hotel in Earl's Court. Leaving our luggage there, we braved the muggy summer air to venture down the road to Benjys (sans apostrophe) for a builder's breakfast (two slices of toast, two vile pork sausages, a rasher of bacon, baked beans, and a pile of chips, served with 'as much coffee or tea as you can drink'), after completely gorging ourselves, we moved on to the Changing of the Horse Guards in westminster, and then up to Leicester Square via St James' Park, Buckingham Palace, The Duke of York, and finally Trafalgar Square. We returned to our accomodation via the Dragon Palace for lunch, which was pleasant enough. Following that, we rested á l'hôtel for a few hours, before travelling back into Trafalgar Square. There we had Ben & Jerry's, as we watched the dusk descend. Walking up through Picadilly circus was interesting, watching an insane man dance to a couple of percussive buskers. Then we came back, and now are still here.

I'm buzzing on caffiene at the moment, but will hopefully crash soon, and sleep through til morning.

P.S. French youths are hot. Our plane was full of them.

Tomorrow I leave the country and never return. Until January.

I will be updating LJ more regularly, and probably twitter (dannyboy_588) at times also.

Have fun in the next six months. Sorry I didn't get to see you all before I leave.
